2020-21 Highland Kindergarten Information

Kindergarten Orientation: In lieu of an in-person kindergarten orientation, families will receive all pertinent information digitally prior to the beginning of the school year.  Kindergarten teachers will prepare a presentation that will be shared with families that covers a variety of topics (for example, how to access learning digitally/online resources, “About the Teacher” video, FAQs about kindergarten). Families will receive digital orientation information directly from their child’s classroom teacher. Students will also be able to “Meet their Teacher” digitally on Thursday, September 10, through our virtual Open House.

First Day: Kindergarten students will follow the district calendar, with a start day of September 14 or September 15. All students, including kindergarten, will return using a phased-in, staggered schedule (Hybrid Model – Approximately 50% of students each day, alternating days). During the two week (September 14 – September 25) hybrid model, kindergarten teachers will orient students to the classroom routines, sanitation procedures and overall school operations.

Students will be assigned into one of two groups – Green or White cohort:

  • Green: Monday, Wednesday, every other Friday (Last names A–K)
  • White: Tuesday, Thursday, every other Friday (Last names L–Z)
  • September 28: All students report

Kindergarten Registration: If you have a child who will be 5 years-old by September 30, 2020, you may register for kindergarten through the district website. Please complete the online registration process through Final Forms. If you have questions regarding registration, please contact the school office.

2020-21 Reopening Plan, Revised Start Date

Dear Highland Parents/Guardians,

The Highland Board of Education held a special meeting on 8/3 to discuss the updated reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year. As with the initial draft plan, the first priority remains the health and safety of our students and staff.

The recommendations within the plan are based upon the best scientific and medical information available to us at this time. We ask that you carefully review the plan, which includes the district's facemask requirement and updated start dates for the school year. The board also adopted a newly revised 2020-2021 academic calendar. It is attached for your convenience and also available on our website at www.highlandschools.org.

As stated previously, we realize there is no one perfect solution that will meet the needs of every single person affiliated with the Highland Local School District. However, we remain hopeful that we can continue to work collectively on behalf of our school community.

Parent Update: 7/28/20

Dear Highland Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for providing your feedback to the Highland School District’s Reopening Plan (DRAFT) document.  Below you will find the survey results regarding the learning and transportation options.  The Board of Education is currently in the process of reviewing all of the comments submitted by parents and staff members.  Once that review is complete and full consideration given to all of the suggestions and feedback, a final plan will be released.

The overwhelming majority of parents and staff asked that the school calendar be adjusted to reflect a start date after Labor Day.  Therefore, a new school calendar will be released with the final plan.  We wanted to notify all families and staff that the preliminary start date of August 24 that was suggested in the draft plan, will be changed.  Currently, we are looking at a revised start date of either September 8 or September 14.  All of that information, once finalized, will be communicated as well.
